Because as that pencil neck geek explained, time is fixed. They are merely sliding back and forth on a string. So, everything that has happened in the past, has already happened. Like when he explained to Sawyer that banging on the hatch to talk to Desmond was futile, because Desmond only met Sawyer for the first time when Oceanic crashed onto the island. If it didn't happen in the past the first time, it can't happen now. So Ben most certainly remembers meeting them as a child, he remembers Sayid shooting him, and probably even governed the actions he took as an adult. -Mal

The fixed timeline actually makes it more interesting than an alter-your-past version. Lost has always been about characters' pasts and the events and experiences that made them who they are. The stuff with young Ben is awesome in that regard. He's known these core characters (Sayid, LaFleur/Sawyer, Juliet, Kate, Jack, Hurley) since his childhood, kept tabs on them throughout their lives (with the help of Richard), and when they finally dropped out of the sky many years later, he was ready for them.
