But I read yesterday that the reason it may have killed younger folks in higher numbers is because people who were exposed to the 1957 swine flu outbreak may
have immunity.
You say I'm a bitch like it's a bad thing...

The thing that gets me is that schools are closing here if there is 1 confirmed case. Schools do not close when the regular flu is going around or even
meningitis. Which almost makes me think what do they know that we don't know? Why such the panic and closing schools and sporting activities?

I would like to see what sort of memos are being provided to government officials (such as the Pres) regarding the swine flu.

Me too Karolinn. This memo came out today from our building management.
As a result of recent international news coverage regarding 'swine flu', some Crescent customers have asked about Crescent's proposed plan of response. As always, Crescent will continue to coordinate with, and work under the direction of, local, state, and federal authorities to determine a course of action based on prevailing circumstances. Crescent will take reasonable measures to communicate with its customers regarding the necessary course of action as soon as is practically possible. Crescent risk management personnel periodically review the official government websites for information on pandemic flu and the swine influenza located at http://www.pandemicflu.gov/ href="http://www.pandemicflu.gov/">www.pandemicflu.gov or http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ href="http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/">www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ or http://www.hhs.gov/ href="http://www.hhs.gov/">www.hhs.gov. Our property websites also are being updated with these links and any changes or updates in our plans. We encourage our customers to remain informed by monitoring these websites and other reliable information sources. We also encourage our customers to prepare contingency plans for the operation of their businesses should a swine flu outbreak occur. Please feel free to call or email with any questions or comments. It is our objective to maintain and operate a safe office environment for us all. |

I think it's a case of city and school officials not wanting to be blamed if children get sick. They are closing schools out of an abundance of caution.
Right now the virus is relatively benign but that can change because the virus can recombine its DNA anytime it infects a new person (or animal.)
The little girl who died in Texas had had a chronic respiratory condition, she was also visiting from Mexico City, and she was not diagnosed with H1N1 until after she died. The unfortunate thing is that she was taken through a large mall before she was hospitalized. I think it was the Gallaria(?). The 1918 flu went around the world three times. The first time it was relatively benign. The second time it had mutated and killed people. The third time was deadly. IIRC, the third time had close to a 100% mortality rate for pregnant women. I think this will pass, leaving us unscathed. The people who have died were apparently the poor, the unhygienic, the malnourished and those with underlying health problems. |

Personally I hope everyone & their family's outlast this scare (my dad has the flu!) Good luck to your girl Chelle!
Milw has closed 12 schools so far, and an Oconomowoc school has closed becuz a student is suspected of being a "probably case", (& was recently to Mexico) which caused the 2 schools that share their bus company to also close. The first 5 closed schools are in the predominately high Mexican populated area of Milw. The annual Cinco de Mayo celebration has been canceled. Theres only 23 'probable cases' in Milw County, 34 in the state of Wisc. I think this will pass, leaving us unscathed. The people who have died were apparently the poor, the unhygienic, the malnourished and those with underlying health problems. They also have limited access to medical care and I would think they have comprised immune systems with the poor quality of their drinking water, and living conditions. Its real smart of Chrysler to announce now that they are moving to Mexico. |

The fear here has reached a fever (no pun) pitch! I now have the entire week off of school this week, as the health dept. has urged our
district to close due to three confirmed cases plus several potentials. Hmmmm, an extra week off, paid, that we don't have to make up. I'll take
it!!! My daughter and I are gonna hang out all week and enjoy the time!
Does this yuku make my butt look big(ger)? |

In my neck of the woods in SE Michigan, today, I received an automated call from the school district. The entire district will be closed at least until
Wednesday because of 1 suspected case at the high school. Not long after, the day-care center called to tell us that the health department had asked them to
close as well. The are several schools in the Detroit area that are scheduled to be closed starting tomorrow. They closed one district down the end of last
week - and the patient's test results came back negative.
Let the poor girl go, and that poor little dog, DoDo. Elphaba, I know you dont want to hear this, but somebody has to say it. You
are out of control! I mean, come on! They're just shoes! Let it go!

Nobody here in my town so far. When i was in college at LSU in 1976 the swine flu broke out and they made us all get the vaccine, we had absurd lines waiting
for the damned thing, but it was the first time I ever saw the gun that shoots the meds through the skin, and it did sting. This thing could be real mean come
winter, and if it breaks out at schools we will have closings again. {not because of fear of deaths, just so many will catch it and kids spread germs like
water}

I would get worried if this same strain shows up this winter because it may be more virulent.
A funny story*- yesterday we went to the grocery store. Soon, we heard this dreadful continuous coughing that you could hear across the entire store. I could tell the person wasn't near me so it didn't bother me at first. But it kept going on and I finally asked my husband who was doing this. He pointed out a young latina in the late twenties, and sure enough, she was just coughing away, not covering her mouth and picking her nose. I was glad we had already gone down the aisles she was going, touching things, putting them back, etc. We were in the soda aisle when I heard her behind us and said to Mr. plato, "Here she comes; let's get out of here!" The other two ladies near us said pretty much the same thing. So we all cleared that aisle. Then I was afraid she'd get behind me in the checkout, but she went into the one in front of me. I got a good chance to watch her. Coughing constantly, not covering her mouth, sounding like a foghorn, picking her nose. The checkout guy had to look up from his current customer and see who was doing this. I felt so sorry for him. His face just crumpled when he saw she was in his line. I thought he was going to pee right there. *It was funny to see people run away from her, but it won't be funny if the employees at my favorite grocery store start getting sick. |

The only problem with closing down the schools?
Now all the infected kids will be at the mall. |

They say as Sarah mentioned, it isn't worse than regular flu, but people still die from regular flu ! CNN said the reason it attacks the healthy young and
mid age is because they haven't been getting any flu shots, so they have no immunity. I have my child get the flu shot every year, to keep it from getting
to rough if she gets it and I have to nurse her, I cannot afford her to get deathly ill with it and expose me more. The CDC said to vaccinate all kids, I guess
people haven't been doing that.
Speaking of vaccinations they sent a list out for the 7th graders next year, and it's like a page long and you must have proof of vaccination by entry time, are people that remiss about children getting their shots? |

My kids were all done with the majority of their shots by grade k.
Since they had the varicella (it wasn't available earlier), booster tetanus, and Adam has had the meningitis one that is for his age group. I think that's it. None of us have had flu shots. |

Another at risk group is those with other chronic medical conditions made much worse by the flu (such as asthma).
