When my mother-in-law died a few years ago, when my husband took all the necessary documentation into her bank, they had him close her account and moved all funds into an account in his name. I was at lunch today with some of my jr. high school girlfriends and the topic turned to our aging parents and the frustrations they cause. After a lot of bitching about my mom's latest disaster (eating 10 day old fish, getting the runs and now needing me to steam clean her carpet) it occured to me that I'm fortunate to still have her to complain about....

My cousin went thru the same thing with one of Wachovia's predecessors, Core States Bank, when his dad died. He ended up needing to drive to the courthouse in Wilmington to get a death certificate from the county prothonotary, but that's the way Delaware does it, I'm sure it's totally different in Wisconsin.

I have in hand 2 checks made out to her. One for $7.12 for an over payment on a medical bill, and one for $22.48 after cancellation of her newspaper.

She has a checking account with Wachovia. I write "For Deposit Only" on the back of the checks. Go to a local Wachovia, get a deposit slip, fill it out and sashay my fat ass up to a teller.

Me: "Hello"

Wachovia Teller: "Hello"
